They can trigger MFA friction, confuse audit logs, distort license counts, and create hidden dependencies on personal credentials. Worse, if the employee leaves or the account is disabled, the automation may break without warning.
3. What should we log for nonhuman identities?
At minimum, log actor type, owner, credential type, scope, request ID, target resource, action, result, and correlation ID. Where possible, also retain source IP, issuer, environment, and delegation chain. Those fields let you reconstruct what happened during an outage or security incident.
4. How do we control rate limits for agents?
Make rate limits actor-aware, not just endpoint-aware. Separate envelopes for humans, service accounts, and autonomous agents, and tie exceptions to change records or time windows. If an agent needs high throughput, give it an explicit allowance rather than letting it compete with human traffic.
5. What is the fastest way to improve our current posture?
Start by inventorying every nonhuman identity, assigning ownership, and removing obviously stale or overprivileged credentials. Then standardize provisioning and logging so new identities cannot be created without metadata. That gives you quick risk reduction while building the foundation for better governance.
6. How do we handle SaaS platforms that don’t distinguish human from nonhuman accounts?
Use compensating controls such as dedicated app accounts, stricter scopes, IP allowlists, short-lived secrets, external rotation, and strong logging enrichment. If the platform cannot support meaningful actor classification, document the gap and treat it as a known control weakness. In some cases, the right answer is to use a different vendor or architecture.
